Overview-
The lesson is designed to introduce the layers of the Earth and their basic properties. Also, the lesson will be an introduction to plate tectonics. The class will participate in a draw along to generate a drawing of the layers of the Earth. Then the class will discuss and generate notes on the Earth's layers and their properties. Next, the class will work in groups to develop background information on plate tectonics.
Instructional objectives:
Draw the layers of the earth with the continental and oceanic crust.
Define what a plate is, and plate tectonics
Time- (85 minutes)
10 minutes
- Class will open with a quick review of what they learned last class. Key points will be – the earthquake patterns and earthquakes and plate tectonics. The class will transition into today’s lesson by the teacher asking, what is a plate boundary? Does it have anything to do with plate tectonics? This will peek their curiosity to want to discover these ideas.
30 minutes
- Have the students draw and label a picture in their notebooks. This will be a draw with me activity, the students wil duplicate the drawing from the overhead and teacher drawing. The class will discuss the different properties of the earth's layers to generate notes that the class will record in their notebooks. Next the students will complete activity 1.11 in class to reinforce the concepts covered. The activity will be reviewed when everyone is done.
45 minutes
- Next the class will break into groups of four, each student will take on a role, a reader, recorder, spokesperson and a timekeeper/ task master. The class will be given a short article about plate tectonics to read. Once the material is handed out the directions will be read out loud so everyone understands the assignment. (I will review good reading behavior such as,- highlighting, under lining and reading the guiding questions first.) Also, the roles and duties will be explained to the class.
-Then each group will be assigned a question to answer and become the expert on the question thery were assigned. The teacher will hand each group an overhead with the question written on it, they will record their answer on the overhead to present to class. Each group will have to clearly explain the answer to the class. The class will record their classmates answers in their notebooks.
Conclusion-
The teacher will review the students answer to clarify the material covered and to make sure the students have the correct information recorded. The class will end with a discussion to answer the opening questions.
Assignment Complete guiding questions 7and 8 from the class assignment for homework. Be prepared to discuss and defend your answers next class.
Assessment- On going assessment of the information presented in class.
